Historical connections

Political interaction with Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s expansion in the Cis-Sutlej region, not descent from him. Faridkot is a Brar house; it is not labelled as a Phulkian misl.

Our family story

The Faridkot ruling house grew from the Brar chiefs of the Kot Kapura region. Its pedigree follows Hamir Singh and his descendants through Charat Singh, Gulab Singh and Pahar Singh. During the expansion of the Lahore kingdom, Faridkot was taken by Ranjit Singh and subsequently restored under British intervention in the Cis-Sutlej settlement. The nineteenth-century account describes Pahar Singh’s support for the British in the First Anglo-Sikh War and his recognition as Raja in 1846. Wazir Singh, Bikram Singh and Balbir Singh followed. The family’s palace developed under Bikram Singh and Balbir Singh. Brij Indar Singh, Gajendra Singh’s son, became Balbir Singh’s adopted heir. The later branch leads to Harinder Singh, whose state joined the Indian Union through the 1948 covenant. This is a selected historical tree; descendants are invited to add documented generations, photographs and memories for review.

Source and relationship notes

Selected branches from the government revised pedigree (1940), printed page 246. Parent links are recorded source claims, not independent certification. Succession is not substituted for parentage. Earlier legendary origins and living descendants are omitted. Name variants include Kapur/Kapura, Atar/Attar, Pahar/Pahad, Dip/Deep, Brij Indar/Brijinder and Har Indar/Harinder. Brij Indar appears twice in the chart to show birth and adoption; this tree uses one person with separately labelled parents. The Supreme Court genealogy (2022, PDF page 2) supplies the later dates and maternal relationships. Manjit Inder is explicitly described as deceased there; his death date is left blank.

Family history

History from the book

Important people and events

The 1940 pedigree distinguishes the birth and adoptive branches of Brij Indar Singh. The palace record describes building work under Bikram Singh (1874–1898) and Balbir Singh, including additions in 1899–1902. The 2022 court record contains a later genealogy and refers to Harinder Singh’s covenant of 5 May 1948.
